DO I HAVE TO TAKE ALL THE COURSES LISTED ON THE MAP?
No absolutely not. The MAP is meant to be a starting place, something that you can discuss with a mentor, faculty member, or SLS alum for guidance.
IS THIS TOOL SHOWING ME WHAT I NEED TO GRADUATE FROM LAW SCHOOL?
No. This is a suggestive tool built to help you navigate the waters a bit. For specific help with what courses and units you need to graduate, please visit the folks in the Office of Student Affairs.
HOW CAN I SHARE A MAP WITH OTHERS?
There are a few ways to share a map. On the map page you will find a left hand menu of black buttons. One button allows you to EMAIL your map, and another button allows you to PRINT your map. The printed version of the map tightens it up into a listed format that can be printed with or without relevancies.
WHY DO I SOMETIMES SEE THE SAME COURSE LISTED MORE THAN ONCE FOR A PATH?
If you see the same course listed more than once for a particular PATH, you may need to check and see if you have a DIRECTION selected in the orange menu at the top of your screen. For example, since the tool is very flexible, you are not required to select one of the 4 DIRECTIONS (Academia, Litigation, Regulatory & Policy, Transactional) before you select a PATH of interest to you. For example, if you choose the PATH, Business Law: Venture/Entrepreneurship, before you select a DIRECTION, then course listings for ALL DIRECTIONS will be listed -- and the reason some of the courses are listed more than once means they have different "relevancies" (or reasons you should consider taking that course) based on a DIRECTION. So the reason you should take ACCOUNTING (Law 226) for a transactional practice is different than why you should take it if you want to be a litigator. It only does this in the listing view though, so once you are at the map (and you have not filtered by a DIRECTION) then you'll see that a course is listed only once but its details list all the relevancies per DIRECTION and per COURSE TYPE one after the other. If you always select a DIRECTION - this will never happen to you. If you have a DIRECTION and a PATH selected and you still see the same course listed more than once - it's a bug. Please use the SUGGESTION button to report it.
Navigating the Tool
WHY IS SOME TEXT IN ORANGE AND SOME TEXT IN BLUE?
Orange text is our way of giving you a hint that if you read nothing, skim the orange text for the high level points. Items highlighted in blue are actual hyper links to other areas of the tool or to links to places outside the tool. Use the text color option in the upper right corner to really punch up the orange highlights or to darken text if necessary.
WHAT ARE THE 3 LITTLE BOXES IN THE UPPER RIGHT OF THE TOOL?
Click them and see what they do! They lighten or darken your text on the page. Orange and Blue text is not effected, in fact orange text pops a bit more giving you clues as to what we think are the important points should you not feel like reading. Blue text indicates that it is indeed a hyperlink to more information or an outside website.
WHAT IS THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE FIRST LIST PAGE AND THE MAP PAGE?
The list page that you receive once you select a specific PATH gives you a thorough explanation of that area. Also, there is a SKILL SETS tab in this view that you do not get with the MAP view. The MAP view will likely become your favorite view for sure.
WHAT IS THE FASTEST WAY TO GET THE MAP VIEW?
The first few times you use SLSNavigator, you will likely find yourself clicking on many different options to see what appears. Once you've done that, (and there are no mistakes by the way) getting to the MAP seems to be where folks like to end up. The quickest way is use the [+] sign on the bottom of the PATH category tab. The [+] sign opens the PATH so that you can see all it's subcategories. Select a subcategory and your list view will be presented, which is where you will find your MAP IT button.
