Conservation of natural resources (i.e. agriculture, fossil fuels, forestry, waters, etc.) is a growing national and international issue, and the complex variety of statutes, regulations, and rulings that comprise the body of environmental and natural resources law is in constant flux. Natural resource lawyers must not only have an in-depth knowledge of environmental law, but also a basic understanding of the underlying science and the industrial processes at issue.

Natural resource lawyers must not only have an in-depth knowledge of environmental law, but also a basic understanding of the underlying science and the industrial processes at issue.

Natural resource attorneys provide a wide array of services. They may advise clients on land use issues and in the acquisition and disposition of natural resources (i.e. water, fisheries, timber, minerals, etc.) and may represent clients before the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and other resource agencies throughout the United States. In addition, they may advise clients in the utilization of public lands and resources and in the development of energy projects utilizing renewable resources. As water is one of our most precious resources, many natural resources attorneys help navigate intricate water rights proceedings and manage the complex wetlands permitting process. On the wildlife side, some lawyer s assist clients in navigating the complicated regulatory requirements associated with the Endangered Species Act, ranging from regulatory compliance and counseling, to the development of single- and multi-species habitat conservation plans, to the identification and implementation of multi-forum approaches to ESA challenges.

On the litigation side, many conservation and land use attorneys have established practices in complex case and natural resource litigation, trying a wide variety of cases in state and federal courts.
