Law School

Recommended for route(s):

[ Academia ] [ Regulatory & Policy ] International Law: General

Why it is relevant for ...

[ Academia ] [ Regulatory & Policy ] as a Related Elective for those interested in International Development : This practicum is for students who will work on one of the following international projects: the Afghanistan Legal Education Project, the Bhutan Law and Policy Project, or the Timor Leste Legal Education Project. It is important for students to learn something about the history and legal system of the country as well as research skills relevant to their specific country and project. They will also benefit from the past work product and experiences of current project members as they seek to develop project management skills.

General course Description:

The State-Building and Rule of Law Practicum is a one-credit class that introduces incoming members of the Afghanistan Legal Education Project, the Iraq Legal Education Initiative, and the Timor Leste Legal Education Project to their respective countries and to the past work of project members. Professor Erik Jensen serves in an advisory role to the practicum, and current leaders of each of the three projects coordinate and lead the course. The course has two goals: to introduce students to the general background and legal system of the country of their respective projects, and to help students prepare for the work they will complete during their 2L year. For the first part, current students or specialists on each country present to the relevant project team on particular topics (e.g., the history of Afghan law) so that students develop an understanding of the greater context in which their work will play a role. During the second part of the course, current project members (current 2Ls and 3Ls) lead skill-based class sessions based on their experiences. These classes include project management; critical analysis of past texts to help students understand the voice, format, approach and quality standards found throughout the projects; and research skills relevant to students¿ specific projects. These two components taken together provide a useful foundation to prepare students for their summer research and 2L year.

Course Style: An Experiential course is one in which students undertake tasks derived from or akin to those done by practicing lawyers.

Course Frequency: Offered once a year
