[ Litigation ] as a Related Elective for those interested in Financial Markets : Securities litigation can be either civil or criminal in nature, and whether you expect to be on the defense side of the bar or representing a plaintiff agency like the SEC or the Department of Justice, this course is a useful examination of contemporary litigation. It considers recent high profile insider trading cases as well as huge securities class actions. Those who expect to handle litigation alleging securities fraud or other types of SEC-related white collar crime will benefit from this review of SEC cases, as will securities lawyers who manage capital transactions and need to understand the SEC rules regarding issuance of securities. General course Description: This course covers contemporary securities litigation, including federal and state private class actions, civil proceedings brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission, and criminal actions brought by the United States Department of Justice. The course will addresss litigation alleging securities fraud, insider trading, and the SEC's recently adopted whistleblower rules. Much of the course will rely on recent high-profile litigation, including the JDS Uniphase jury trial (in which plaintiffs claimed $20 billion in damages); litigation over the recent financial crisis; insider trading claims against Raj Rajaratnam and Mark Cuban, and the SEC's complaint and settlement with Goldman Sachs in the Abacus transaction.
