[ Litigation ] as a Related Elective for those interested in Constitutional Law : Students who anticipate an education law practice or a career in employment law should consider one or more courses that focus on the exercise of civil rights, such as constitutionally protected speech. Disputes in both school and employment contexts often involve alleged violations of civil liberties. General course Description: A survey of First Amendment law, including a close study of text, the drafting and ratification process, and the development of modern First Amendment theory. The course will explore the multiple participants in the speech process, including the speaker, hearer, publisher, target and regulator, and ask why the law favors certain participants over others. The evolution of Supreme Court case law will be analyzed historically, with special emphasis on the relationship between free speech and democracy, Course Style: A Substantive course teaches the law, theory, and policy in a particular area of law Course Frequency: Offered once a year |
