[ Litigation ] as a Key Elective : An understanding of the relationship between the WTO dispute resolution system and domestic regulation is key to any student of international trade, and to practitioners who represent business clients who claim or need to defend against claims of injury from import competition. General course Description: This course surveys the economic theory of international trade agreements, and uses it to explain and critique core features of the law of the World Trade Organization. The topics considered include constraints on border instruments, the dispute resolution system, the most favored nation obligation and the exception for preferential trading arrangements, the national treatment obligation and the interface between WTO law and domestic regulation, subsidies disciplines, and safeguards (protection for industries injured by import competition). With respect to each topic, the course presents relevant economic theory and empirical evidence along with the pertinent legal principles.
