[ Litigation ] as a Related Elective for those interested in Poverty Law : Students with a focus on poverty and economic development will find this a useful examination of international cases advocating women's rights in land and property as well as other basic rights. General course Description: This course takes a holistic approach to examining the legal mechanisms designed to advance women's rights internationally and regionally. The course starts by exploring the theoretical underpinnings of international women's human rights including feminist jurisprudence and cultural relativism. It then provides a foundation on the international legal instruments pertaining to women's rights. With this theoretical and legal backdrop, the class then examines a variety of international case studies through a gender lens including sexual violence against women (domestic violence and violence in armed conflict), sexual reproductive rights, women and HIV, women's land and property rights and women's rights in development. Prior international law coursework is not a prerequisite to taking this course.
