Policy Practicum: Stereotype Threat and Higher Education

Law School

Recommended for route(s):

[ Academia ] [ Litigation ] [ Regulatory & Policy ] Education Law: General

Why it is relevant for ...

[ Academia ] [ Litigation ] [ Regulatory & Policy ] as a Related Elective for those interested in Public Policy : A policy practicum is a great choice for skills-based training in the range of methods available to effect changes in the law. Some policy labs, like this one, offer students an opportunity to do research on the scope of a problem not adequately addressed in current law or regulation. Developing an expertise in empirical research is particularly useful for those interested in an academic career. The course should be particularly useful for students interested in education policy and the issue of discrimination in schools. It considers the problem of diminished academic performance by groups that may be the subject of negative stereotypes.

General course Description:

A large body of social psychological research has established the existence of stereotype threat--a worry that one might be viewed through the lens of a negative intellectual stereotype. This concern provokes anxiety and can undermine the academic performance of members of negatively stereotyped groups, underrepresented minority groups in particular. Stereotype threat acts like an intellectual headwind.nThis project will consider changes that colleges and universities institutions might undertake to reduce the effect of stereotype threat.nElements use in grading: Class Participation, Attendance, Written Assignments, Final Paper.nConsent Application: To apply for this course, students must complete and e-mail the Consent Application Form available on the SLS Registrar's Office website (see Registration and Selection of Classes for Stanford Law Students) to the instructors. See Consent Application Form for submission deadline.
