[ Transactional ] as a Related Elective for those interested in Financial Markets : Students interested in the capital markets should take one or more courses in finance. This overview of the financial system, cross-listed with a Finance course at the GSB, will help students understand the various functions of banks and government bodies in providing the global system with the liquidity to enable business ventures, on the one hand, and the regulation to safeguard trust and effective governance, on the other. General course Description: This interdisciplinary course will discuss the role of the financial system within the broader economy and its interactions with the rest of society. The course will provide an overview of the financial system, cover the basic economic principles essential for understanding the role of finance in the economy, and discuss policy issues around financial regulation. It seeks to mix students from GSB, Law School, and other departments. Topics to be discussed include: (i) The financial system, from microfinance to global megabanks: how and why finance can benefit society as well as endanger and harm; (ii) Financial regulation: why and how? (iii) Other people's money: the challenge of effective control, governance, and trust; (iv) The politics of banking and finance; (v) Ethical issues in finance. Special Instructions: This course is cross-listed with the Graduate School of Business (Finance 332). Law student enrollment may be subject to lottery if over-subscribed. Course involves minimal mathematical content that does not go not beyond high-school math. Elements used in grading: Class Participation, Attendance, Final Paper. Class meets at GSB. Course Style: |
