Why it is relevant for ...

[ Litigation ] [ Regulatory & Policy ] : This shared workspace allows students to learn from and collaborate with lawyers working in civil government. Take the opportunity to seek perspectives and advice from professionals in this area.

Description:

Lawyers working for governmental agencies in a civil capacity, whether it be federal, state, or local government, may find themselves working on a range of different substantive issues. Unlike criminal government lawyers who focus on either prosecution or defense, civil government lawyers do not fall into any easy categories. The one common denominator is that civil government lawyers share the same mission to serve the greater public interest. This might include drafting environmental regulations to protect public lands, enforcing tax laws through civil prosecution, developing legislative policy and other initiatives, defending government entities from civil litigation, acting as in-house counsel for government agencies, and representing agencies in administrative hearings. Many private sector practice areas have a public sector counterpart. For instance, securities regulation, land use/planning, tax law, employment law, and antitrust are a few areas that are handled by both private and civil government lawyers. The bottom line is that substantive areas vary widely.
