Why it is relevant for ...

[ Regulatory & Policy ] as a Related Elective for those interested in Political Process : Students interested in policy work should consider taking one or more courses that address the political process itself, including the regulation of voting, political parties and the influence of money on key aspects of the democratic process.

General course Description:

This seminar explores the practice of political law in California. Students learn about several important areas at the intersection of the law and politics in California, including campaign finance, independent expenditures, issue advocacy, ballot measure campaigns, election contests, ballot access issues, voting systems, and redistricting. Students not only are exposed to the statutes, regulations, and case law that comprise political law in California, but also learn about the practice of political law from the instructor and a number of guest lecturers, including both lawyers and political consultants who are experts in various areas and who provide both technical and real life perspectives. Rather than learning from a course book, students are assigned reading materials comprised of various statutes, regulations, court decisions, legal briefs, articles, and research studies.

Course Style: A Substantive course teaches the law, theory, and policy in a particular area of law
