[ Litigation ] as a Key Elective : Life science advances frequently raise ethical, legal and policy issues. Lawyers working in the life sciences industry need to stay abreast of recent scientific developments and understand how these advances are viewed politically and socially, which can trigger changes in the law. General course Description: This course explores the ethical, legal, and public policy issues arising from recent advances in the biomedicine and the biosciences. Various approaches to bioethical reasoning will be introduced including casuistry, social justice, resource allocation, and individual rights in areas such as refusal of treatment conception. Topics include, but are not limited to, the use of forensic genetics in criminal law, neuroscience and national security, race and ethnicity in genetic research, experimentation on human subjects and prisoners, privacy of medical and genetic information in the information age, synthetic biology, and do-it-yourself medical and genetic testing. No prior knowledge in science, medicine, philosophy, or related disciplines is required. Course Style: A Substantive course teaches the law, theory, and policy in a particular area of law Course Frequency: Varied, check w/ registrar |
