[ Regulatory & Policy ] as a Key Elective : It is important for environmental lawyers to have an understanding of IP law. Increasingly, innovative technologies play a key role in addressing many environmental issues, especially in the area of energy and climate change. Intellectual property rules affect the quality and availability of innovative ideas and products necessary to improve our standard of living. One way to achieve environmental protection is through coupling incentives for innovation in beneficial technologies with restriction on harmful technologies. This course examines the ways in which intellectual property rights are asserted, exchanged, protected, and respected, addressing both regulatory and strategic considerations involved in the business and legal decisions regarding intellectual property. Students should consider taking 1 or more courses addressing intellectual property issues. General course Description: This seminar, co-taught by eBay's first In-House Counsel and former Director of Law & Public Policy, Brad Handler, examines the ways in which intellectual property rights are asserted, exchanged, protected, and respected, both in theory and in practice. Special attention is devoted to the regulatory and strategic considerations involved in the business and legal decisions implicating intellectual property.
