[ Academia ] as a Foundational Course : Increasingly, innovative technologies play a key role in addressing many environmental issues. This is especially true in the area of pollution and harms to public health. Intellectual property rules affect the quality and availability of innovative ideas and products necessary to improve our standard of living. One way to achieve environmental protection is through coupling incentives for innovation in beneficial technologies with restriction on harmful technologies. It is important for environmental lawyers to have an understanding of IP law. Students should consider taking 1 or more courses addressing intellectual property issues. This survey course covers patents, copyrights, trademarks and trade secrets. General course Description: This is an overview course covering the basics of intellectual property law -- trade secrets, patents, copyrights, and trademarks, as well as selected other state intellectual property rights. This course is designed both for those who are interested in pursuing IP as a career, and those who are looking only for a basic knowledge of the subject. There are no prerequisites, and a scientific background is not required. Course Style: A Substantive/Statutory course deals with law, theory, and policy in the context of a particular code or statutory scheme. Course Frequency: Offered once a year |
