LAW 577 Regulation of the Political Process Law School Recommended for route(s): [ Litigation ] Civil Rights/Liberties: General Why it is relevant for ... [ Litigation ] as a Key Elective : Students interested in civil liberty issues and the protection of individual rights should consider taking one or more courses in constitutional law. This course considers restrictions on one of our most important civil rights, the right to vote, together with related topics like the regulation of political parties. General course Description: This course considers regulation of political process. It begins with an overview of the restrictions on the franchise. We then turn to constitutional and statutory constraints on apportionment under the equal protection clause (one person, one vote and political gerrymandering in particular) and the Voting Rights Act, before looking at judicial remedies for elections gone bad. If time permits, we may also consider regulation of political parties and the use of direct democracy. Course Style: A Substantive/Statutory course deals with law, theory, and policy in the context of a particular code or statutory scheme. |
