[ Academia ] as a Relevant Course outside SLS for those interested in Social Science : This course provides a broader social context for the circumstances that can lead to crime and incarceration by examining the causes of poverty in urban settings and the family structure of the urban poor. Students may want to take one or more courses dealing with social science perspectives on crime. General course Description: (Graduate students register for 249.) Recent research and theory on the urban underclass, including evidence on the concentration of African Americans in urban ghettos, and the debate surrounding the causes of poverty in urban settings. Ethnic/racial conflict, residential segregation, and changes in the family structure of the urban poor. Course Style: A Substantive course teaches the law, theory, and policy in a particular area of law |
