[ Litigation ] as a Related Elective for those interested in Corporate Governance : The effects of globalization on persistent global problems like sustainability and human rights have spurred an awareness of corporate social responsibility for some of these problems. This course is a useful examination of the way businesses are beginning to work with governments and other non-state and nonprofit actors to develop norms and initiatives that range from legal principles to self-regulation. General course Description: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), including its interrelated human rights and environmental aspects, is now being "operationalized" as global governance and law rapidly evolve to support the role of businesses and other non-state actors in more ethical globalization and sustainable development. This seminar examines the historical and current context, drivers, and ways that CSR hard law, soft law, corporate governance, self-regulation, legal principles, and ethical norms and initiatives are adapting to the increasing power and impact of businesses. The course also considers the key theoretical and practical issues and modes of analysis relevant as businesses along with states, IGOs, IFIs, NGOs, and their various stakeholders rebalance public values and private interests in fascinating new ways to address persistent global problems affected by human rights and environmental sustainability (including e.g. climate change, ESCR, and conflict).
