From Business Concept to Business Plan

Graduate School of Business

Recommended for route(s):

[ Transactional ] Business Law: Commercial Transactions & Licensing

Why it is relevant for ...

[ Transactional ] as a Relevant Course outside SLS for those interested in Entrepreneurship : This course should be particularly useful for students who expect to work with new ventures, whether their clients are venture capitalists or the entrepreneurs. A business plan is the essential first document for any start-up. A well-conceived plan will improve the company's valuation and enhance the entrepreneur’s ability to negotiate financing terms with VCs. Knowing what makes a business plan effective, and being able to assist clients in developing or identifying a good plan, is useful for any lawyer working in venture capital or emerging growth. Note: As of Fall 2012, this course is routinely filled to capacity with GSB students. However, you should check with the Graduate School of Business regarding availability in a particular quarter.

General course Description:

The creation of a business plan is a useful process for entrepreneurs to evaluate and think through a business concept. The business plan is also a standard tool to present the business to investors when seeking funding. Business plans are as important for innovators who think through new business models and their implementation in established companies. This short course will focus on the process of going from a business concept to a business plan. The course will be hands-on, and it will start from a concept accompanied by preliminary market research (this means students don't have to come up with their own business ideas). It will then go through the analysis which leads, by the end of the course, to a business plan.

Course Style: A Substantive/ Perspective course looks at law from an external or non-traditional standpoint.
