[ Academia ] [ Litigation ] [ Regulatory & Policy ] [ Transactional ] as a Relevant Course outside SLS for those interested in Global Health : Students interested in health law policy should consider taking 1 or more courses addressing broader health policy issues. This course explores the impact on global health of industries like tobacco and aluminum. It also looks at the foreign aid industry, including initiatives to fight diseases like AIDS.

General course Description:

The objective of this course is to examine the role of global industries and multinational organizations in shaping the health of individuals around the globe. The course explores the salient debates on the impact of industries such as food, tobacco, and aluminum, as well as the role of global health initiatives and the foreign aid industries they spawned. We will explore how the changing landscape of human health and disease is affected by these industries¿ historical legacies and future prospects. This is a survey course geared towards students interested in understanding the multidisciplinary interface between global organizations and global health. The course is based on illustrative cases and lectures with a distinguished roster of outside speakers. Sir Richard Feachem, former director of The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, will address the link between the aid industry and health ; David Kessler, a champion of the fight for tobacco regulation as a commissioner of the FDA, will discuss the Tobacco Industry evasion and its impact on health; Mark Cullen, Professor of Medicine at Stanford, will talk on Alcoa- "When an aluminum multinational takes on a health mission"; Dr Derek Yach, Director of Global Health at Pepsico, will address how Pepsi and the food industry can make an impact on health; and Professor Judith Kimmerling, author of "Amazon Crude" will talk about the role of the oil industry upon the rainforest in the Amazon and its impact on human health.

Classes will meet once a week and a final paper will be required. Dean Michele Barry, Senior Associate Dean of Global Health at Stanford and Prof. Eran Bendavid, whose work addresses the role of foreign aid in improving health, will be co-directing the class.
