[ Litigation ] as a Relevant Course outside SLS for those interested in Immigration Law : Future legal services lawyers who anticipate serving low-income communities should select 1 or more courses addressing the immigrant experience, as at least some of the population they serve will be recent immigrants. An understanding of the immigrants' struggle for socioeconomic integration into the U.S. is also a useful perspective for civil rights lawyers who may handle discrimination issues, and for both immigration and criminal lawyers who may see recent immigrants caught up in the justice system. General course Description: Contemporary sociological issues affecting Mexican-origin people in the U.S. Topics include: the immigrant experience, immigration policy, identity, socioeconomic integration, internal diversity, and theories of incorporation. Course Style: A Substantive/ Perspective course looks at law from an external or non-traditional standpoint. |
