[ Regulatory & Policy ] as a Key Elective : Students interested in a career in public policy should understand how to use and respond to policy studies. These studies are often cited as a basis for law and regulatory reform, and they have played a significant role in both the legislative arena and in key court decisions. Policy studies analyze the initial policy decisions implemented in legal rules and also the effectiveness of their continued implementation. Students should take one or more courses focusing on policy analysis. General course Description: This seminar examines the use of policy analysis in substantive and procedureal law reform and the practical and political constraints that limit its usefulness. The seminar uses a "case study" approach, focusing on examples of policy analyses that have played a role in recent policy debates, in the legislative arena and in key court decisions. Topics examined in previous seminars include capital punishment, school vouchers, class actions, racial profiling, "3-strikes," gun control, and gays in the military. Course Style: A Substantive/ Perspective course looks at law from an external or non-traditional standpoint. Course Frequency: Varied, check w/ registrar |
